Media Education Center takes part in ICANN 50
Media Education Center participated in the Second At-Large Summit ATLAS II "Global Internet: The User Perspective" http://atlas.icann.org/ held as part of the 50th ICANN meeting in London, United Kingdom. On June 20-26 representatives of around 150 At-Large Structures from over 70 countries worked in 5 thematic groups: The Future of Multistakeholderism, Globalization of ICANN, Global Internet: The User Perspective, Transparency and Accountability, At-Large Community Engagement with ICANN and drafted a Declaration, which was presented to the Board of ICANN at its public session.
In particular, the Declaration emphasizes the importance of digital literacy, education and the empowerment of the Internet user community and calls for promoting the fundamental rights of Internet users and re-establishing the trust in the Internet. The document stresses the need for effective protection against arbitrary and pervasive surveillance, collection, treatment, handling and use of personal data. The Declaration calls for permitting users to obtain the deletion of their private data from servers and databases; ensuring compatibility between the rights enjoyed by users and the terms of service of private companies. The document also stresses the importance to promote the use of secure, efficient, interoperable online identity credentials; web standards favouring user autonomy and security, to foster substantial local content, beyond infotainment and ensure access to truthful information and knowledge.
Armenian Citizens participate in EuroDIG in Berlin
June 11 - 13, 2014. Three thematic Hubs to follow EuroDIG - European Dialog on Internet Governance Forum in Berlin, have been organised in Yerevan, Armenia by Media Education Center with support of the Council of Europe Office in Yerevan, ISOC Armenia, Eurasia Partnership Foundation and Yerevan State University. Topics related to hate speech and its consequences for human rights online, child protection, network neutrality, data protection, privacy, security have been discussed by about 60 participants of the thematic hubs. The Thematic Hub 'Hate Speech and On-line Defamation and Consequences for Human Rights On-line' have distinguished by the diversity of participating civil society organisations and groups: No Hate Speech Movement, Women’s Resource Centre, Safer Internet Armenia, Media Education Center, Eurasia Partnership Foundation, iDITORD, ISOC Armenia, Xenophobia Prevention Initiative. The Hub Org Team, Naira Avetisyan, Haykaz Baghyan, Izabella Sargsyan and Narine Khachatryan have held three preparatory meetings in May to shape the agenda of the Remote Hub, during which topics of political hate speech, religion-based hate speech, hate speech arising from misinterpretation and cultural differences have been discussed and identified as topical and timely.
On June 12 the Hub participants held pre-meeting and discussed the problems of on-going on-line and off-line propaganda wars and mechanisms of prevention of on-line cross-border hate speech, hate-speech against women challenging local cultural norms and international community involvement in local conflicts, reinforcement of international human rights instruments against gender based violence and universal definition of hate speech. Two other hubs have been co-organised at the Yerevan State University and ISOC Armenia Office.
Armenian experts Narine Khachatryan, Safer Internet Armenia Coordinator, and Arman Atoyan, X-Tech Founder have been panelists at the workshops in Berlin: 'Intelligent Risk Management for Children and Youth in the Digital Age' and 'Cloud and Big Data: Delivering on the Promise while Safeguarding the Privacy'. Narine Khachatryan has also contributed to shaping the workshop agenda dedicated to empowerment of children and youth, positive content, safety by design and parental control by technical means.

Internet Governance Issues Discussed at Yerevan State University
April 07, 2014. Over 40 students of the Yerevan State University Departments of International Relations, Telecommunications, Journalism, Informatics and Applied Mathematics participated in a workshop onpublic policy issues related to Internet governance. The workshop was followed by the simultaneous broadcast of the Fifth Russian Internet Governance Forum. Issues related to privacy, cybersecurity, cross-border jurisdiction, net neutrality discussed during the workshop. The students received the DiploFoundation's Book An Introduction to Internet Governance 5th edition. Media Education Center and Internet Society of Armenia will organise three more workshops ahead of EuroDIG forum. See photos
Armenian Students Participate in ICANN 46 Meeting
March 27, 2014. For the first time Armenian students participated in the ICANN Meeting. The NextGen@ICANN initiated by NetMission.Asia is aimed to equip the youth on Internet Governance issues. A week-long conference held in conjunction with the ICANN 49th meeting in Singapore raised awareness of ICANN policy discussions among young adults. The highlight of the NextGen@ICANN was a public session where the youth delegates role played a board meeting, simulating ICANN's multi-stakeholder structure. Lusine Andreyan and Sasun Kostanyan were Media Education Center's delegates.

Safer Internet 2014. over 300 teachers of 150 schools re-trained
February 24, 2014: Over 160 teachers of Yerevan's 150 secondary schools have participated in trainings between February 14 and February 24, the Internet Safety Module for Parents has been introduced. Over 300 teachers participated in the 'Wikipedia as a Safe Environment ' and 'Writing Articles for Wikipedia " courses.
The trainings are held in frames of the 'Safer Internet 2014' project aimed at empowering children and parents, students and educators and providing them with tools and educational materials to help use new technologies effectively and safely.

Safer Internet 2014. Internet Safety Open Lesson at School N 186
February 17, 2014. Internet Safety Open lesson organized at the Yerevan Secondary School N 186 marked the launch of the Safer Internet 2014 activities in Armenia this year. Journalists gathered at the school to listen to children's opinions regarding their rights and responsibilities on the Internet. The Best Open Lesson and the Best Parental meeting competitions are announced among schools by Media Education Center, Internet Society of Armenia and Orange Armenia. See Photos...

Armenian citizens participate in EuroDIG through remote Hubs
June 25, 2013. Armenian citizens participated in the EuroDIG Forum in Lisbon on June 20 and 21 through several hubs organised in Yerevan. The hubs were supported by the Council of Europe Office in Yerevan, Media Education Center, ISOC Armenia, Union of Information Technology Enterprises and iDITORD. The work of the Armenian Hubs enabled not only the remote participation in the Forum, but also served as a prerequisite to establish the Armenian Internet Governance Forum. Read more...

Armenian School Children Participate in 1st Children's Forum at ICANN
April 12, 2014. Media Education Center, as part of the European NGO Alliance for Child Safety On-line (eNACSO), took part in the 1st Children’s Forum in ICANN 46 April 6-12, 2013 in Beijing. Students of the Yerevan-based Anania Shirakatsy Lyceum, recognized the best school in frames of Safer Internet Armenia 2012 Program, received the opportunity to participate in the 5 days Children's Forum, which gathered 10 children's groups and child-led organizations from all over the world. Armenian delegates, Eva Musaelyan, Arman Tsirunyan and Lily Saroyan presented their ideas and opinions about Internet issues and policies related to them. Children discussed the way forward, built the connections, participated in meetings and public forum, discussed and formulated points of new child protection policies in connection to child-related new gTLDs, addressed the ICANN public with the Declaration, spoke to the President and CEO of ICANN Fadi Chehadé.
